Sonakshi Sinha, who makes her debut in Tamil cinema in the role of a village girl who helps the maharaja (played by Rajinikant during the British Raj) in the K.S. Ravikumar-directed Lingaa, won several hearts with her candid speech at the audio and trailer launch of Eros International’s period drama. “I don’t know what to say after everyone has said so much about the film and Rajini sir. I wondered who will know me here in the South. So I introduce myself to all of you as “The Superstar’s heroine”. I am the superstar’s heroine and am very proud and honoured to have worked with Rajini sir and to be part of this prestigious film,” said Sinha, amidst a thundering applause. If that was not all, the actress, who looked stunning in a Manish Malhotra designer saree, sang and danced to, “All you Rajini fans, don’t miss the chance, Lingaa dance ...” that had everyone cheering and singing with her.
The event was held at Chennai’s famous Satyam Cineplex which was adorned with gigantic posters of the superstar and packed with guests and fans of Rajinikant. A stage was erected just below the 70 mm screen to accommodate the film’s crew. The program, which took off dot on time with Rajinikant arriving sharp at 10.30 am, went on for three hours wherein the music and the trailer of the film was launched. While each member of the team spoke about their experiences working on the project, a special video had A.R.Rahman who could not attend the event, speaking about the film’s music and his association with the project.
Rajinikant, who plays a double role in the film – a king of a bygone era and the other, a contemporary man, said that he agreed to do the film on one condition; that K.S. Ravikumar guarantee that the film would be released within this year. “I did not want to do another film which would take 2-3 years to shoot,” said the actor to which the director said that the entire team worked without a break and on a tight schedule for six months so that the film wrapped up on time.
Anushka Shetty, the other leading lady who added the glamour quotient to the film as compared to Sinha’s rustic look, said it was an opportunity of a lifetime to work with the superstar of Indian cinema.
Others present on the occasion were Kannada superstar Kiccha Sudeep, Tamil actor Santhanam, Telugu actor Jagapati Babu, veteran actor Vijaya Kumar who are all part of the film besides director Ameer (who happily gave away the title Lingaa which was registered with him, to Rajinikant), lyricist Vairamuthu, Nandu Pahuja, Senior VP, Theatrical, Eros International Media Ltd, producer Rockline Venkatesh, production designer Sabu Cyril besides Rajinikant’s family comprising wife Latha, son-in-law Ashwin, daughters Aishwarya Dhanush and Soundarya A Rajinikant, Director, Creative & Head Eros Digital for South India and many others.
The distribution rights have been acquired by Eros International and the film, to be released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, releases worldwide on December 12, Rajinikant’s birthday.
