Brazil will acquire more than 100 Gripen Next Generation (NG) multi-role fighter aircraft from Saab, a senior Brazilian Air Force (FAB) representative has revealed.
Speaking to Flightglobal at the International Fighter conference in London, UK, the representative confirmed that the FAB has a full requirement for 108 airframes.

According to the senior figure, a feasibility study on possible future scenarios was conducted in 2007, with the FAB concluding on the final number based on its requirements for the future.
While the aircraft are scheduled to be delivered in three batches, FAB is yet to decide the number of single and twin-seater aircraft it requires for operations with the US Navy.
The air force is also believed to be in talks with the South African Air Force, which also operates the Gripen.

In October, FAB awarded a SEK39.3bn ($5.4bn) contract to Saab for the delivery of 36 Gripen NG fighters, including 28 single-seat and eight two-seat jets, as well as related systems and equipment.

By GlobalDataThe first 15 aircraft will be manufactured in Brazil, whereas the remaining 21 will be jointly produced by Brazilian and Swedish engineers, according to the news agency.
Deliveries are set to take place between 2019 and 2024.
The Gripen NG shares the same smart design and innovative technology as the combat proven JAS 39 Gripen and is scheduled to initially replace FAB’s Mirage 2000C fighters, followed by the F-5EM and A-1M aircraft.
The aircraft offers more thrust, extended range and endurance, and is fitted with new sensors, including an active electronically scanned array radar, highly effective electronic warfare systems and multi-function communications.
Also ordered by the Swedish Air Force, the aircraft is expected to address the market’s demand for a sophisticated and flexible combat aircraft with sustainable costs.
