78L in dist finish Aadhaar process, more centres open
PUNE: Over 83% citizens in Pune and the rural parts have enrolled for Aadhaar numbers, so far.
The district administration has opened 83 centres, including 17 in Pune city, and 66 in rural parts to assist over 16 lakh citizens who still have to register for the unique identity number.
Officials said there has been steady enrolment for the last six months, but they would set up additional machines if centres witness a heavy rush.

The Aadhaar project was introduced by the Congress-led UPA government to provide a unique identity number to every citizen of the country.
In Pune district, which includes areas under Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation limits and the rural parts, the administration has a target of 94.29 lakh population for enrolment, of which 77.94 lakh have already registered at the designated Maha e-seva centres which take their fingerprints and scans their irises.
Officials said they have deployed one machine at each Maha e-seva centre. Of the 83 machines, 70 have been provided by the state government while the remaining 13 are deployed by a private firm.

The machines are directly connected to the Aadhaar server to store the applicant's information in the system.
A number is generated after the applicant gives the information and the card is delivered at home. Citizens who want to enrol can visit these centres with proofs of residence and age.
In the normal process an applicant can expect delivery of Aadhaar cards at the given address within three months of enrolment. If it is not delivered, citizens can get a print from the UID website or at a Maha e-seva kendra. Those who want a re-print of their card can log on to the UID website for a print.
An Aadhaar card can be a proof of identity. It helps while applying for a passport and is accepted at polling centres.

Low response to Aadhaar smart card
Seven Maha e-seva centres have the facility to issue smart cards to citizens with the Aadhaar number printed on it to those who have already generated the number. These are polyvinyl chloride cards like PAN cards or driving licences in appearance. Though the facility began five months ago, it has had a poor response, district authorities said.
