Critic’s Corner: What’s on TV Thursday

Melanie Cleary/SHOWTIME

Homeland 10 p.m., Showtime

I’m caught up in this season, despite the “24”-like moves, the overdone writing for Carrie, and the unmet promise of delving further into the character of Quinn. One of my favorite new characters is Martha Boyd, the US ambassador to Pakistan who was engaged to Saul way back and whose husband is a lying, spying creep. She’s powerful, dignified, and smart, and she’s played beautifully by Lalia Robins (pictured). Trivia: Robins played Livia Soprano in flashbacks on “The Sopranos,” and she was therapist Paul’s first love on “In Treatment.”

United States of Drinking 8 p.m., Smithsonian Channel

First of all, yes, there is a Smithsonian Channel, and it is “where curiosity lives, inspiration strikes and wonders never cease,” according to the website. In other words, it’s kind of sciencey, with animal and museum stuff, too. This special looks into the preferred alcoholic beverages in the United States, with food writer Josh Ozersky making moonshine, talking to a microbrewery’s chemist, and visiting an award-winning vineyard.

It’s Effin’ Science 9 p.m., G4

Apparently, effins go northwest for the winter.

The Birds 8 p.m., TCM

If you hear “tuppence a bag,” run.

How to Get Away With Murder 10 p.m., ABC

Bonfire, inanity.
