A wonderful spell of 7-0-25-3 from Shardul Thakur and an unbeaten 83 from Wasim Jaffer helped Mumbai defeat Delhi by six wickets in the Vijay Hazare pre-quarterfinal clash at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium on Wednesday.

Mumbai skipper won the toss and opted to field. Thakur sent back Unmukt Chand (6) and Virender Sehwag (9) while his opening bowling partner, Wilkin Mota, sent back skipper Gautam Gambhir for 22 to leave Delhi struggling at 39/3.

The good work from Thakur and Mota was carried forward by Saurabh Netrawalkar, Iqbal Abdulla and Akhil Herwadkar as they bowled with discipline.

Mumbai were also aided by some wonderful fielding. Delhi were unable to build partnerships and only Milind Kumar contributed by notching up his second fifty in this year's tournament. He was the last man out for 64 as Delhi folded up for 157.

Chasing 158, Mumbai lost Sidhesh Lad for 0 but Wasim Jaffer got going and that eased the pressure. They stuttered slightly in the middle period as they lost Herwadkar, Shreyas Iyer and Yadav cheaply. However, Jaffer continued to bat with confidence and along with Aditya Tare, stitched a 63-run stand to help Mumbai over the line. With this win, Mumbai will take on Karnataka in the quarter-finals in Vadodara on Friday.

Brief scores: Delhi 157 in 42.3 overs (Milind Kumar 64, Thakur 3/25) lost to Mumbai 158/2 in 30.3 overs (Jaffer 83*, Narwal 2/31 ) by six wickets.

ALL-ROUND HARBHAJAN SHINES

Captain Harbhajan Singh led from the front with an all-round effort as Punjab coasted to a comfortable 29-run win against Gujarat. Punjab will meet Railways in the quarter-finals. Put into bat at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground, Punjab rode fine fifties from Amitoze Singh (75), Gurkeerat Singh Mann (72) and Harbhajan (51 off 25 balls) to post a respectable 255 for eight in 50 overs.

In reply, Gujarat batsmen failed to capitalise on their starts as Punjab pace spearhead Sandeep Sharma, who bagged 3 wickets, helped bundle out the Parthiv Patel-led side for 226 in 47.3 overs. The senior off-spinner also performed admirably with the ball taking two for 51 in his quota of 10 overs.

Brief Scores: Punjab 255/8 (Amitoze 75, Gurkeerat 72, Harbhajan 51; Kalaria 3-55, Dahiya 2-46). Gujarat 226 all out (Bhatt 53; Harbhajan 2-51)
