NOIDA: A five-member hacker gang, led by a 22-year-old BCA student, which allegedly hacked into over 200 bank accounts, was busted on Wednesday. All the five men were arrested after Noida police tracked them down by the IP (internet protocol) number of one of them, following a complaint by a resident of Sector 12.
The accused have been identified as Punit Chaturvedi alias Hacker, Anshu, Harender, Sanjay and Varun.
Punit and Anshu are pursuing BCA courses while Harender is an MCA student, and Sanjay and Varun run mobile recharge outlets. Three laptops, internet data cards, ATM cards and a number of mobile phones have been recovered from them.
The police said that the gang, which has confessed to hacking into over 200 bank accounts, used to target people who lodged product complaints online.
According to the police, once they would come across any such complaint against a product of a company, one of them would call up the aggrieved customer, posing as a representative of the company; they would then acquire the personal details of the customer and hacked his bank account.
However, their luck ran out on October 12 when they hacked into the bank account of Apoorv, a resident of Sector 12, and withdrew Rs 10,000 from his account. After the victim lodged a complaint with the cyber cell of Noida police, the cops managed to get the IP address of one of the gang members. The arrests followed.
