Visiting Hawaii was supposed to be a dream "babymoon" for Jennifer Huculak, a Canadian woman who was six months pregnant with her daughter at the time. But when she gave birth prematurely, it became a $1 million vacation, CTV reports.

Before she and her husband, Darren Kimmel, left Canada, she got clearance from her doctor and purchased travel medical insurance through Blue Cross. But after she arrived, her water broke and she had to spend six weeks on bed rest in an American hospital. After she gave birth, her daughter had to spend two months in intensive care, still in Hawaii.

All that care led to a medical bill amounting to a whopping $950,000. And Blue Cross says they won't pay a dime, because they say Huculak had a pre-existing condition and was diagnosed with a high-risk pregnancy before her trip. Huculak contests this, saying all she had was a bladder infection, and her doctor says that did not lead to her premature birth. Blue Cross allegedly didn't disclose its rules about pre-existing conditions.

Now that baby Reese is 11 months old and thankfully healthy, Huculak is grappling with her next move. CBC News reports the provincial government back in Canada has agreed to cover about $20,000 of her bills, but that's hardly enough. She may decide to fight Blue Cross, or even declare bankruptcy.

"It makes you sick to your stomach," she told CTV. "Who can pay a million-dollar medical bill? Who can afford that?"
