Doctors protest ‘tirade’, demand better security
PATNA: The state chapter of IMA on Wednesday took out a rally demanding better security to doctors and action against Madhepura RJD MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav for criticizing the medical fraternity. Pappu also staged a dharna against doctors at Kargil Chowk, demanding the arrest of Bhagalpur surgeon Dr Mritunjay Kumar.
“The doctors have to examine a patient as part of the diagnosis.
However, it is now being labelled as molestation,” said state IMA secretary Dr Sanjiv Ranjan Kumar Singh, referring to the controversy over Dr Kumar whom a lady patient has accused of molesting her in his clinic. “The case of Dr Mritunjay is no different,” Singh said. There has been a series of protests in Bhagalpur demanding the doctor’s arrest.
“Many doctors in the past had been accused of similar charges but none were proved guilty,” Singh said, adding that they were not protecting a wrongdoer but demanded a high-level probe before any action against Dr Kumar. A Bhagalpur court has rejected his anticipatory bail plea.
The doctors said patients create ruckus at clinics for different reasons. There is a law to protect the doctors, but it was never implemented in Bihar. They assailed Pappu for launching a “tirade” against them and demanded action against him.
They also raised the issue of missing PMCH senior resident Dr Kumar Krishna who has been missing since Diwali. They also opposed the Clinical Establishment (Regulation and Registration) Act and demanded the government to repeal it.
Dr Singh said over 500 doctors took part in the rally. They included Dr S N Arya, Dr Gopal Prasad Sinha, Dr Manju Gita Mishra and Dr Shanti Rai, among others.
Pappu said the IMA and Bihar Health Services Association (BHSA) should stop taking cudgels on Dr Kumar’s behalf. “The law should be allowed to take its own course,” he said. Pappu has been fighting against the exorbitant fee charged by the doctors from poor patients in Bihar.
