SURAT: Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) on Monday rusticated two BTech students for a year while awarding minor punishment to three others from the same course for ragging a first year Master of Science in Information Technology (MSc-IT) student.
Tejveer Singh Anand and Dulgach Haryug Singh were rusticated from studies for a year with immediate effect.
They will have to register afresh in the next academic year. Tejveer and Dulgach had played a major role in the ragging that took place outside SVNIT campus on November 12. Antriksh Dogra, Karan Kishore Singh and Anshuman Mishra will only lose one grade (around 10 marks) when their result is tabulated for they had a minor role to play in the ragging incident.
These five students had been released on bail by a local court after their arrest in the case subsequent to lodging of a police complaint by the SVNIT authorities on Thursday last. The five students had trimmed the hair of the victim student and also pulled him by his collar, the SVNIT investigation had found.
"We have taken strict action against the students who were involved in the ragging. The students should understand it clearly that involvement in ragging can spoil their career and ruin the life of the victim. We do take measures to stop ragging on campus but this incident had taken place outside the institute's premises," SVNIT director P D Porey said.
