A head constable and constable posted with the North-East district of Delhi Police have been suspended after the family members of a minor, who committed suicide last week, accused the duo of torturing the boy.

It is alleged that the boy committed suicide after the two policemen, then posted with the Karwal Nagar police station, harased him and demanded a bribe.

The suicide took place on Saturday, a day after 17-year-old Anupam Gupta was picked up by the police who suspected him of having stolen a bicycle.

Although he did not name the two constables, a senior police officer confirmed the development and said that vigilance inquiry had been ordered into the matter to ascertain the facts.

“Action, if needed, will be taken after the findings of the inquiry are submitted. The two policemen have been suspended for not properly handling the matter,” he said.

On the incident, the officer said two sides, one including Anupam, reached the Karawal Nagar police station.

“The matter was settled between them and they went back to their homes. However, the boy committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence following which the family made these allegations. These are serious in nature and need a thorough probe,” he added.

According to the family members of the deceased, Anupam took the bicycle from a boy who escaped from the area. They alleged that another boy Deepu took the bicycle from Anupam by threatening him and sold it off.

A relative said that the owner of the cycle made a complaint with the police and Anupam was picked up on suspicion. According to him, the boy was beaten up at the police station by the cops despite him claiming innocence.

It is also alleged that the two policemen demanded a bribe of Rs. 10,000 from the boy which he was unable to pay and was tortured further.

The police are also waiting for the post mortem report to find the extent of injuries allegedly inflicted upon by the policemen torturing him.
