A no-confidence motion by the legislators of the Left Front against the government led by Mamata Banerjee was defeated in the floor of West Bengal Legislative Assembly here on Tuesday.
While 51 votes were polled in support of the motion 142 votes were polled against the motion. This was the first occasion when a no- confidence motion was brought against the All India Trinamool Congress government, which came to power in 2011.
The motion which read, “This House express its want of confidence in the Council of Ministers” was brought by the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Surya Kanta Mishra and other legislators of Left Front.
Participating in the discussion Dr. Mishra said that the Chief Minister herself has no-confidence over her government that is why she is not present in the House. Ms. Banerjee is on a three-day-visit to New Delhi.
The CPI (M) leader said that the State Government’s attack on democracy and democratic institution is strengthening communal forces in the State.
Congress MLAs staged a walkout for the day stating that the Speaker did not allow a similar motion tabled by the Congress members while the Left Front’s motion was allowed.
