A senior official and a sanitary supervisor were removed by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation on Tuesday, after Home Minister Rajnath Singh found their zonal office in a mess during a surprise check.

The Minister conducted an inspection of the City Zone headquarters, where he found cleanliness to be lacking. According to municipal officials, the compound was generally dirty and the offices had paperwork strewn all over.

North Corporation Commissioner Pravin Kumar Gupta said Deputy Commissioner (City Zone) Hemendra Kumar had been sent back to his parent department, the Railways. Sanitary supervisor Mohan Singh has been suspended, added Mr. Gupta.

Apart from visiting one of the civic body offices, Mr. Singh, along with Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung and Police Commissioner B. S. Bassi, visited New Delhi railway station, Paharganj police station and LNJP hospital. The visit comes at a time when the Central Government has been making all efforts to make Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, one of the pet projects of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a success.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is also banking on the initiative to make electoral gains in the upcoming Assembly polls and the party leadership has been pushing the BJP leaders in the municipal corporations to pull up their socks.

Mr. Gupta said the Minister made some observations about the state of the City Zone office. “Apart from taking action, we have reiterated to all our staff that they must maintain cleanliness," said Mr. Gupta. The civic body replaced Mr. Kumar with Padma Jaiswal.

The Home Minister also visited Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash Hospital. Speaking about the visit LNJP medical superintendent Dr. Siddarth Ramji said: “The Minister inspected the casualty, out patient department, child wing and the emergency departments.”

Stating that the Minister was at the Hospital for almost 20 minutes, he added: “The Minister spoke to the patients about their experience in the Hospital. He also discussed about the services provided by us in the Hospital and wanted to know if there was any difficulties we were facing.”

During his inspection visit at the Paharganj police station, sources said, Mr. Singh also took a stock of other areas like offices, women’s help desk, lock-up, and functioning of the CCTV cameras.
