North Yorkshire Police has launched an investigation after a body was found in the River Foss in York.

Police were alerted to the incident near Layerthorpe at 1130 GMT on (Tuesday, 18 November) after a member of the public spotted the body.

Assistance was called in from the regional Police Underwater Search Unit and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue who launched a boat.

The body was recovered from the river by the fire boat crew just after 1220 GMT.

A North Yorkshire Police statement said :"Enquiries are at a very early stage to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident."

Anyone with information that could assist officers should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and speak to the Force Control Room.
