BERHAMPUR: A 23-year-old woman, who allegedly went missing from her in-law's house at Chudangapur in Ganjam district two-and-a-half years ago, returned to her parents' place at Balipada on Friday with one-year-old son. Babu Mishra, brother of the woman, produced her along with the child before police on Sunday as a missing case had been lodged.
Police produced her before a magistrate on Monday to record her statement.
"We questioned her, but she gave contradicting statements," said IIC, Digapahandi police station, S K Tripathy.
The woman went missing in March, 2012, just five months after her marriage to Pitambar Panda of Chudangapur on November 2, 2011. Panda is working as a labourer in Gujarat. He lodged an FIR with police when his family members could not find her.
Four months after, brother of the woman lodged an FIR, alleging that his sister fled her in-law's house due to dowry torture. The missing case turned to dowry torture case and police started investigating afresh. Now, the case has taken a new turn with return of the woman.
"We suspect love might be the cause of her disappearance. She perhaps remained with her lover. She also delivered the child during the time," said a senior police officer. Police said they are yet to reach a conclusion. "We are inquiring from different angles," the officer added.
