A gang of swindlers posing as officials from the income tax department looted Rs 12 lakh from the house of the owner of Khushi Ram and Sons sweet shop located in K block of Sarabha Nagar in broad daylight on Sunday. Later, the accused took the victim along to his sister’s house in Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar and looted Rs 5 lakh from there too.
The incident happened near Durga Mata Mandir in Sarabha Nagar where heavy police force was deployed on the route because Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra had to cross from that road.
According to information, as many as seven swindlers posing as officials of the income tax department struck at the house of Rakesh Kumar, owner of Khushi Ram and Sons sweet shop. The swindlers came in a grey Innova car bearing a temporary number. They carried revolvers with them.
The complainant told the police that seven persons came and introduced themselves as officials of income tax. The victim said he called them inside and starting serving them tea and sweets. Then two of the accused took out their weapons and demanded cash from him. They threatened him with dire consequences if he raised the alarm.
The complainant said when his wife and child came in the living room, the accused pointed weapons at them.
Police sources said that the complainant gave Rs 12 lakh to the accused and they left the house.
However, the accused took Kumar along to his sister’s house in Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, where they looted Rs 5 lakh.
The incident was recorded in a CCTV camera installed outside the house of Kumar but the police are yet to get the footage.
A case was registered against seven unidentified accused at Sarabha Nagar police station under relevant sections of the IPC, and various police teams were formed to investigate the matter.
