Rohan, Arya adjudged best in Nagpur district badminton tourney

NAGPUR: In-form Rohan Gurbani and Arya Anchalwar were adjudged as the ‘best player’ of the Tulsiramji Gaikwad-Patil Memorial District Sub-Junior Badminton tournament which concluded at the Subhedar Hall here on Saturday.
The four-day tourney was organized by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur in association with Nagpur District Badminton Association.
Rohan clinched triple crown (U-13 boys singles and doubles and U-15 doubles), while Arya bagged a couple of titles (U-13 girls singles and doubles) to win special prizes.
Top seed Malvika Bansod made the light work of Pavitra Somani in the U-15 girls singles final to warm up for her forthcoming event – SGFI School Nationals.
Siddhant Bawankar and Nikkita Joseph lived up to their reputation to retain their U-10 boys and U-10 girls singles titles, respectively.
In an exciting U-15 boys singles summit clash, Gaurav Mithe staged a spectacular comeback to defeat Samarjeet Panday 12-21, 21-10, 21-9. Top seed Gaurav was surprised by Samarjeet’s inspiring display in the first game. However, Gaurav, who edged out Rohan in the semifinal earlier in the day, recovered in time to stop the threatening run of Samarjeet.
Director of Gaikwad-Patil Group Anjali Mohan Gaikwad, international badminton star Arundhati Pantawne, HR head of SNDL Sanjiv Bariar and NDBA joint secretary Naresh Chafekar distributed the prizes.
Cash prizes worth Rs 52,000 and glittering trophies were given to winners, runners-up and semi-finalists.
Leading badminton equipment company Yonex provided shuttles for the tournament. Prizes were sponsored by SNDL Nagpur.
