GUWAHATI: The Special Operation Unit (SOU) of Assam Police has arrested one more person in connection with the Burdwan blast in West Bengal.
On Friday night, Suburuddin Ali, the brother-in-law of key accused Sahanur Alom, was arrested from his home in Nalbari. The SOU team seized 60 books related to jihadi activities, the Quran and medicines which were concealed underground on the premises of Suburuddin’s house.
His tempo and motorcycle were also impounded.
The SOU of Assam Police has so far arrested nine persons in connection with jihadi cases.
Sahanur Alom, a resident of Barpeta district in the state, is still absconding. He has been named by National Investigation Agency (NIA) probing the Burdwan case as one of the key conspirators of jihadi activities in the country at the behest of Jammat-ul Mujhahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
The NIA has so far not taken into custody any of the nine persons arrested by SOU in the state, including Sahanur’s wife Sujena Begum.
SP (NIA) Debojit Hazarika said, “We are looking into the bigger picture. All those arrested by Assam Police’s SOU are being studied. We will take them into custody at a later stage.”
Hazarika added that the NIA has not yet taken over all jihadi-related cases registered by Assam Police here.
SOU personnel also picked up two relatives of Suburuddin — Sahabuddin Ali and his wife Rohima Bibi — and released them on Saturday.
