GUWAHATI: An adult female rhino was killed by poachers at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in the state’s Morigaon district on Friday, according to forest officials.
“The carcass bore bullet marks and the rhino’s horn was
missing,” an
official said. The carcass was spotted on the southern side of the sanctuary by a patrolling party on Saturday morning. This is the second one-horned rhino to be killed inside the sanctuary since January this year.
Last year, 41 rhinos were killed by poachers across Kaziranga, Manas National Park, Orang National Park and Pobitora. Four other rhinos were killed in other areas. According to official records, 193 one-horned rhinos have fallen victim to poachers in the state since 2001.
