Malad murder: Police hunt for agent who helped killer

Gupta made the first call to the agent to inform him that he needed to cross the border a day after committing the murder.

Following the arrest of 27-year-old Arvind Gupta for the murder of Malad housewife Shagufta Khan, the police are now trying to trace an agent who was going to help him cross the border into Bangladesh. Inquiries have revealed that the agent had helped Gupta and his girlfriend cross Indo-Bangladesh border once in the past.

Khan, the estranged wife of bookie Sonu Yogendra Jalan alias Sonu Malad, was allegedly stabbed to death by Gupta in her Malad residence on November 11. Two days later, Gupta was arrested from Howrah railway station by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch. Further inquiries have led the police to an agent with whom Gupta was in constant touch after the murder.

“Gupta made the first call to the agent to inform him that he needed to cross the border a day after committing the murder. In October, Gupta and his girlfriend had crossed the border into Bangladesh, and had paid the agent Rs 10, 000 each in exchange of helping them cross the border. Apart from his girlfriend, who was waiting for him in Bangladesh, the agent was the only person that Gupta contacted after the crime,” said a Crime Branch officer.

Gupta has allegedly told his interrogators that he had gone to Khan’s house with the intention of robbing her. When she opened the door, however, he first asked her for a loan of Rs 50, 000 and when she refused, he stabbed her, the police said. On Saturday, CB officers handed Gupta over to the Malad police, in whose jurisdiction the murder was committed. He will be produced produced before a Holiday Court on Sunday.
