LONDON: Canadian veteran
Daniel Nestor, who will partner the big-serving Indian
Rohan Bopanna next season, said the pair needed to get on a roll and pull off winning streaks as early as possible.
The 42-year-old Nestor, who split with Serbian
Nenad Zimonjic, with whom he's playing the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals here, and Bopanna are coming together after ending their previous partnerships.
The 38-year-old Zimonjic, who initiated the split with Nestor specifically because he wanted to play with a younger partner, will team up with the 34-year-old French
Michael Llodra.
Bopanna, 34, on the other hand, had reunited with Pakistan's Aisam Ul-Haq Qureshi at the start of the year, but the duo had a poor season, failing to make the year-end field in London. Bopanna and Qureshi then sat down with their American coach
Scott Davidoff in September and decided it was best they go separate ways.
"At my age, it helps to play with a younger partner. Bopanna is a solid doubles player. He has a big serve and we will be good together."
For Bopanna and Nestor, who played two tournaments together since announcing their decision to team up, Basel and Paris, both indoors, it wasn't the best of beginnings.
"It's a beginning," Nestor, who finished the year with an individual ranking of No. 4, said of the partnership in which Bopanna plays the forehand side.
"There are definitely things we need to work on as a team serves, volleys... We were playing better with every match in our two tournaments, which is encouraging for a new team. We'll need to win a few matches at the start of the year, get on a roll, that would be big for us."
