Mumbai: During the Indian Premier League itself, in 2013, all hell broke loose one morning in the month of May. Why? India speedster S Sreesanth’s name came up in a spot-fixing controversy along with Mumbai cricketer Ankeet Chavan and Haryana’s Ajit Chandila – three of them represented Rajasthan Royals.

On May 16, the police arrested Sreesanth and his teammates. He apparently used his towel tucked in his pants to signal the bookies that he was about to concede runs in that over in the match against Kings XI Punjab. Chavan used his wristband to do the same so that bets could be placed in a match against Mumbai Indians.

On the other hand, Chandila – who was supposed to pull his shirt up – forgot to signal though he gave away 14 runs in the over he bowled in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad . This led to arguments.
According to police, Sreesanth was in an inebriated state at the time of his arrest and was accompanied with a woman in a SUV outside a five-star hotel in Mumbai.
Chandila and Chavan’s employers, Air India, terminated them from services. Sreesanth and Chavan were banned for life by Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI).
