RAJKOT: A patient, who was allegedly abandoned by doctors at civil hospital in
Bhavnagar two days ago, died on Friday. Sources said that Suresh from West Bengal had
cellulitis.
"The patient was unconscious since he was admitted. On Thursday night his condition deteriorated and he was shifted into ICU where he died on Friday," said in-charge superintendent Dr Arvind Sisodiya.
On Wednesday night, Suresh was found lying unconscious on the road by some locals who admitted him to the hospital after calling a 108 ambulance. However, resident doctors Dr Smit Mehta and Dr Ramkrishna Darji of surgery department allegedly gave him preliminary treatment and asked a ward boy to go and dump him outside the hospital.
Some members of social organizations saw this man near a small canal outside the hospital and questioned the ward boy Suresh Chauhan about him. He told them that he had just followed instructions of the doctors. These organizations got the man re-admitted.
The issue, however, echoed in Gandhinagar where the health department ordered an inquiry and committee was set up to look into this matter. A 10-member committee was formed and it was decided to suspend the two doctors. The committee had found that the doctors were prima facie wrong in not admitting the patient.
Sources said that cellulitis is a common, potentially serious bacterial skin infection. If the patient is left untreated, the spreading infection may rapidly turn life-threatening.
