GUWAHATI : The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)’s Jatiya Setona Jatra entered the fourth day on Friday and party leaders toured Barpeta district to reach out to the rural people.
Party president Atul Bora and other senior leaders visited flood and erosion affected areas and interacted with traditional artisans.
“The people here are living in extreme conditions. Natural calamities — flood and erosion — have snatched their lands, destroyed their properties.
They have repeatedly knocked on the government door for aid but the government has not done much for them,” said Bora.
The AGP leaders interacted with the brass and betel craftsmen.
Bora said only a regional party can give importance to these issues and fight for their cause.
“Neither Congress nor BJP has paid attention to these local issues which are important for us. These artisans are very poor. The state should do the needful to revive the dying art,” added the party chief.
The leaders visited the Barpeta satra and discussed various issues plaguing the locality with the satradhikars.
Hundreds of youths have joined the party in the last four days, said a senior leader.

This journey will continue for the next two months and it will cover every district of the state including the Barak Valley.
“We need to be with the people to understand their problems. Our journey will continue. The tour was planned following a decision at the National Political Convention in October,” added Bora.
