KARACHI: Karachi police is once again on the terrorists' hit list. A police inspector lost his life and three others were wounded in the latest attacks on law enforcers' vehicles in districts East and South. Meanwhile, police personnel of District Central escaped two bomb attacks as the devices luckily failed to explode.

In the first major attack on Friday, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Arshad Mehmood Tanoli, 46, son of Jumma Khan, was killed and a police head constable, Ghulam Ali Jatoi, son of Imam Din Jatoi was wounded when unidentified armed motorcyclists opened fire at their police mobile car near Parking Plaza, Saddar.

"The personnel were deployed at their routine spot when they came under attack," said Brigade SHO Ghulam Nabi Afridi, who was subsequently suspended and demoted by the district East DIG.

The officer said that the police personnel were deployed at the specific point for security duty as the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court travels along New Preedy Street to go to court. The deceased police officer was transferred and posted to Brigade police station around a month ago and had been earlier posted at the Ferozabad police station. He used to live at the Brigade police family quarters and hailed from Haripur Hazara.

ASI Tanoli was shot six times and died on the spot. Jatoi sustained at least four bullet wounds. Police have also found 10 empty shells of a 9mm pistol from the crime scene. A departmental inquiry against DSP Ali Muhammad Khosa has also been ordered.

Around 15 minutes later, two police personnel, head constable Asif Javed, 38, and a constable, Abrar Fayyaz, 35, were wounded when armed motorcyclists attacked a vehicle of the Preedy police station near Tibet Centre on MA Jinnah Road. Fortunately, the cracker bomb hurled by the motorcyclists did not hit the police mobile directly and fell on the road where it exploded. Three passersby, identified as Furqan Riaz, 45, Nadeem Jumman, 38, and his eight-year-old son, Daroof, were also injured due to the explosion. SHO Ejaz Khawaja said that the police personnel were conducting routine snap checking when the incident took place.

Later, at around 11:20am, personnel of the Sir Syed police station narrowly escaped a bomb attack when the devices failed to explode. The personnel were conducting snap checking near UP Morr, North Karachi, when armed motorcyclists hurled two explosive devices at their vehicles.

Police cordoned off the area and immediately summoned the bomb disposal squad officials to defuse the devices. BDS experts said that both the bombs were concealed in bottles and each contained 650 grams of explosives including nails, adding that both the bombs also contained highly inflammable chemicals.

This has been the deadliest year for the Karachi police. Around 189 police officials and personnel have lost their lives since the start of the Karachi Operation last year.
