Five fishermen (four from Kanyakumari and one from Kerala) arrested by the Iran Coast Guard (ICG) on September 22 were released on Friday, according to a release from the South Asian Fishermen Fraternity (SAFF) here.

Fr. Churchil, general secretary, SAFF, and Leema Rose, president, Tamil Nadu Fisherwomen Federation, thanked the Chief Minister and the Centre for the initiatives taken for their release.

Fr. Churchil said that a fine of Rs. 5.5 lakh slapped on the fishermen was paid by their Qatar-based sponsor Yusuf Ahamed Hasan Al Finali. This enabled them to continue fishing in Qatar Sea from Friday.
