RAIPUR: The Raigarh police have arrested two senior students of Shri Lakhiram Memorial Medical College in connection with the alleged suicide of the first year MBBS student, Nishant on November 8. Both the students have been booked on charges of abetment to suicide and Anti Ragging Act 2001.
The suspects, Ankit Patel and Heeramani Patel, were arrested following a complaint by the deceased’s mother, Preeti, who accused them of ragging her son and forcing him to commit the suicide.
Preeti has submitted 35 pages of her Facebook chat conversation with Nishant in which he has given graphic details of the harassment he had to face at the hands of his senior in the name of ragging.
Confirming the arrest, SP Raigarh, Rahul Bhagat, said they have been booked under section 4 of Chhattisgarh Anti Ragging Act 2001 and Sec 306 of IPC.
When contacted, dean of Raigarh Medical College, Dr SL Adile, however remained in a denial mode and said there had been no ragging in the college. Claiming that there were “many issues” involved in the case.
The dean claimed that an inquiry was conducted by the college’s anti ragging committee into an incident that occurred on October 7, where some junior students were made to dance without clothes. He said the committee had recorded statements of the students and some had claimed that they voluntarily removed their clothes due to the hot weather.
Interestingly, Dr Adile had his own logic to debunk the ragging allegations and claimed the Oct 7incident could not have led to the student committing suicide a month later on Nov 8. “There is something more to it”, he said referring to Nishant’s Facebook “suspicious” chat with a female friend on October 29.

He said as per the chat, the girl told Nishant, “tujhe marna hai to mar; aur tu nahi marega, to me mar dungi” (if you want to die, die and in case you don’t die, I’ll kill you”. Dr Adile also claimed that there was something “suspicious” about Nishant’s admission to the college also. “He did not belong to the state, as his domicile certificate was made only in June this year”, he said adding that the Director Medical Education had been informed about this.
Nishant had been reportedly staying in the hostel for the last two month. He had returned to the college on November 7 after Diwali break. His body was found hanging on nylon rope from the ceiling fan in his room the next day. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.
