MUMBAI: Veteran sports scribe and president of the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai, Chandrasekhar P Sant, passed away around noon at his residence here today following a massive heart attack.

He was 61 and is survived by his wife and two sons. According to his sister, Sant had complained of severe chest pain and was rushed to the doctor who prescribed him medication.

He came home, consumed the pill but then after some time suffered a massive cardiac arrest and died, she said.

Sant, a former sports editor of 'Maharashtra Times', was a long-time treasurer of the Sports Journalists Federation of India and among the few Indian sports scribes who were present to witness Kapil Dev's team winning the coveted World Cup in England in 1983.

He covered several top level sports events as a print journalist and was a respected columnist in Marathi newspapers, besides being a well-known commentator in Marathi who was associated with All India Radio and Doordarshan for decades.

"A man of few words, Sant was the only sports journalist to have attended the JK Bose All India Cricket tournament for sports journalists since its inception. He held many posts in SJFI and in SJAM. We will miss you, Santji," said former SJFI president Saba Nayakan in his condolence message.
