Security forces fire in panic near Congress rally

Srinagar, Nov 12: Security forces today fired in air in panic after some gunshots were heard near a Congress rally in South Kashmir’s Yaripora area this afternoon apprehending that it was a militant attack.
The firing caused panic among the Congress supporters and others in Yaripora village where Inayatullah Rather, Congress candidate, was scheduled to address a gathering.
Police and security forces rushed to the area where from gun shots were heard and conducted searches in the area. However, nothing was found.
A police spokesman said that in the afternoon people had assembled near Sumo Stand Yaripora to participate in a public meeting which was to be addressed by Inayatullah Rather Contesting Candidate of Congress party. In the meanwhile, some kind of sound was heard from the apple orchards side which appeared to be firing shots. Police teams were sent to ascertain the nature of the sound and it was found that the sound came off firecrackers as two marriage functions were being held in the neighborhood. Suspecting it to be an adverse fire some security personnel fired some shots in air.
In another incident a blast sound was heard from Government Middle School, Bobsipora in Ganderbal district in central Kashmir where polling is to be held on November 25.
The sound of the blast created panic in the village and police rushed to the area to ascertain facts. “Immediately Bomb Disposal Squad was sent, however, no explosive substance was found. Police is investigating as to what caused the bang,” the police spokesman said.
