Business partner at SoBo retail chain found dead

Body found at Worli seaface; Churchgate resident’s brother, sister-in-law and nephews held for abetment.

A 37-year old business partner of a well-known retail chain in South Mumbai was found dead in his car on Wednesday morning at Worli Seaface.

The police suspect that the man, Ojas Shah, a partner in Asiatic Departmental Store, Churchgate, died due to poisoning.

A suicide note, which held his brother Ashwin and sister-in-law Deepika responsible, was found in his Toyota Etios. In addition to the two mentioned in the note, Worli police have booked Shah’s nephews Siddhant Shah and Dhairya Shah in connection with the suicide.

Shah left his Churchgate home at 9.15 pm on Tuesday. Police said he had quarrelled with his brother over property. His wife rang him repeatedly when Shah did not return late at night. His phone had been switched off. Later, she called a friend of Shah and asked him to search for her husband.

The friend spotted Shah’s car at Worli Seaface and discovered the man inside, unconscious. The friend summoned the police, who broke open a window. “Shah was not dead when we found him in the car,” said senior inspector Sunil Jain. “He was taken to Workhardt Hospital in Mumbai Central were doctors declared him dead on admission. A tablet has been recovered which has been handed over to doctors for examination.”

A physician at Nair Hospital’s forensics department, where the post-mortem examination was conducted, said there were no internal or external injury marks on Shah’s body. “It looks like a case of poisoning but we have kept the cause of death reserved and the viscera have been sent to Kalina for chemical analysis,” said the doctor.

Worli police is yet to record Shah’s wife’s statement. The two have a 10-year-old daughter, police said.
