Pedestrians and drivers in Labasa Town are unhappy about the condition of the traffic lights on the town’s main street which they say have been like that for some time.

Fiji Roads Authority maintenance works manager, Dale Nicholls said traffic lights were one of the many assets that the FRA was responsible for.

He said across Fiji they had 38 sets of traffic signals and many of these needed upgrading or replacing, including the ones in Labasa Town.

“Due to the age of the electronic equipment and scarcity of spare parts, the signals at Labasa are likely to continue to be troublesome until such times as the major components are replaced” Mr Nicholls said.

He said the FRA worked through a list of priorities within the approved budgets and would continue to do so until such time as all of the sets of signals were upgraded.

This year, he said, upgrades were carried out to the traffic signals at the Makoi and Kinoya intersections with the Kings Road.

“As we continue with this programme we seek the public’s help, motorists in particular, to advise us when signals stop working,” he said.

Mr Nicholls said if signals stopped working then drivers had to exercise the right hand rule as they would at an uncontrolled intersection.
