Manchester United midfielder Anderson has hinted he is keen to rejoin Gremio, claiming "there is always a possibility of returning" to the Brazilian club.

The 26-year-old, a £20m signing from Porto in 2007, has no future at Old Trafford and is expected to be released by the club when his current contract expires at the end of the season.

The former Porto star was close to sealing a move to Fiorentina during the summer after spending the second half of last season on loan at the Serie A club, but the move eventually broke down following a failure to agree terms.

United are reportedly prepared to allow Anderson to leave the club for free in January and should the chance present itself, the Brazilian will not pass up the opportunity to return to his boyhood club.

"There is always the possibility of returning to Gremio. It's my home, I grew up at the club. I am a fan, everyone knows that," Anderson told Radio Bandeirantes.

Anderson added that the possibility of a Gremio homecoming has previously come up, only for the move to breakdown.

"It's possible, as it was in the past. I have been contacted by the club before.

"I want to be closer to my family, to my daughters. There has never been an offer, but I have known the club for a long time. I am not desperate to join Gremio, though, as I respect all Brazilian clubs.

"Gremio have a chance but it doesn't depend on me, it depends on their board. I was close a year ago, before joining Fiorentina. I would accept a reduction in my wages."

Anderson has made just two appearances for United this season, despite an injury crisis that has undermined Louis van Gaal's first season in charge at Old Trafford.

He was handed his only start under the Dutchman in the club's humiliating 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in the Capital One Cup before providing an uninspiring cameo off the bench in the 0-0 draw with Burnley.
