AckkStudios Announces Y2K for PS4 and PS Vita

Turn-based JRPG Y2K is coming to PS4 and PS Vita, developer AckkStudios announced yesterday.

Y2K, previously known as Project Y2K, puts players in control of an unemployed college graduate as he investigates the death of a woman through the use of a 1990s message board, according to its PlayStation blog post. The game’s title is in reference to the computer bug that was expected to crash computers and networks at the beginning of the year 2000.

Players can drive around the game’s city and countryside in a van known as the “Death Cab.” Combat plays out in turn-based battles. Once enemies are defeated, they are gone forever and players will need to seek out more enemies or gain access to a special dungeon to continue grinding for levels.

AckkStudios designer Andrew Allanson cites the “Mother” series, known as Earthbound outside of Japan, and award-winning Japanese writer Haruki Murakami as inspiration for Y2K’s characters.

An early build of the game will be on-hand along with more than eighty other indie games at the upcoming PlayStation Experience taking place in Las Vegas on December 6 and 7.

Earlier in the year, the studio revealed via Twitter that Y2K will be releasing on PC and Wii U. hopes to launch the game by late 2015 or early 2016.
