Father stabbed in eye while saving daughter from rape

MALDA: A bid to save his daughter from a rape attempt has landed a father in hospital with 15 stitches on his head and his right eye heavily damaged.
In a fit of rage, the offender also inserted a rod into his eye.
To make things worse, local Trinamool leader and state minister Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury questioned the woman’s character.
Sixty-five-year-old Genu Choudhury of Lakshmighat village in Malda’s Englishbazar ekes out a living by repairing boats.Genu had married off his daughter 15 years ago. Recently, Genu’s 35-year-old daughter, who is now a mother of two, came to stay with her parents.
Neighbour Rintu Sheikh had allegedly been “making lewd comments and indecent proposals” at her which she turned down. On May 8, a kangaroo court in the village warned Rintu not to repeat such act.
But instead of stopping, Rintu pasted filthy posters on the woman in her village, prompting the father and the daughter to lodge a complaint with Englishbazar police station.
The police didn’t take action against the accused. Instead, the victim claimed that Rintu stepped up pressure on her to withdraw the complaint. Later, the police mediated talks between the victim’s family and the offender and allegedly tried to make peace by offering money to the victim.
On Monday night, Rintu entered the woman’s house and made an attempt to molest her. But he could not succeed in his attempt as Genu came in his way. Angry Rintu hit Genu on his head with an iron rod and inserted the road in his right eye. Neighbours rushed in hearing the woman’s screams and took Genu to Malda Hospital.
Doctors, who are planning a surgery on Genu’s right eye, said he might not regain eyesight.
State food processing minister Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury added fuel to the fuming tension. “I got to know that the woman had an illicit affair with the accused. They used to meet frequently. Yesterday, her father happened to see them in an intimate situation, which is why he was attacked,” he said.
