Suzuki Celerio scores 3-star rating in Euro NCAP; To launch in Europe next month

Euro NCAP has released its latest set of safety ratings which includes the Suzuki Celerio. The entry-level hatchback, which replaces the old Alto in Europe, scored a three-star rating in Euro NCAP testing, held last week.

The Celerio managed to score 61 per cent rating in adult occupant protection, 74 per cent for child occupant, 68 per cent for pedestrian safety and 38 per cent in the safety assist category. It was first showcased at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year and is set to be launched in Europe next month.

Suzuki has revealed that the European-spec model will be sold with a new 3-cylinder Dualjet engine, besides the familiar K-series unit. The Celerio, as we know, is currently sold in India by Maruti Suzuki. 

The Europe-bound Celerio will be exported from Thailand. It is scheduled to be launched in Germany first with two engine options. Design wise, the car shares its look with the India-spec model and even mechanically, the 1-litre K-Series engine produces the same amount of power as the model sold here.

Suzuki will also offer its new three-cylinder DualJet engine with a higher compression ratio and twin fuel injectors. To extract as much efficiency as possible, the Celerio will be fitted with a stop-start system that will enable the vehicle to achieve a claimed figure of 27.7kmpl. The K-Series engined model, on the other hand, is rated at 23.25kmpl.

The entry-level hatchback segment is filled with popular cars like the Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto, Toyota Aygo and the highly acclaimed Volkswagen Up! Suzuki, then, could have a tough time luring buyers into the showrooms.
