Gritty bowlers steal win for Mumbai
AHMEDABAD: The catch that Vishal Dabolkar took to dismiss Deep ak Hooda off his own bowling was anoth er perfect example of the adage catches win matches. Dabholkar dived full length to his left to pull off a stunning one handed catch as Mumbai went on to beat Baroda by four runs in a low-scoring match.
Baroda were 167-6 in the 39th over chasing Mumbai's 201 all out in 45.3 overs.
Hooda was batting well and Baroda's fortunes depended on how well the U-19 all-rounder would handle pressure after their mainstay Aditya Waghmode departed after a wellcompiled 69 from 94 balls.
Earlier, Hooda had ripped through the Mumbai batting order to return with career best figures of 5-55 in what was only his second List A game. Hooda used his 6"2' frame to good effect extracting fair amount of bounce and turn on a slow wicket.
Mumbai had made two changes to the side that beat Saurashtra the previous day, bringing in Dabholkar and Sarfaraz Khan in place of Wilkin Mota and Bravish Shetty.
The move didn't click as they lost makeshift opener Abhishek Nayar for a duck in the second over. Wasim Jaffer and Herwadkar held on for a while but Hooda spun a web around the Mumbai batting line-up and they were soon struggling at 157-6 in the 34th over when Sarfarz Khan came to the crease.
It would have been disastrous for Mumbai had Waghmode latched on to a cut from Khan off Pandya when Mumbai was precariously placed at 160-6 in the 36th over.
Khan started tormenting Baroda with some neatly hit boundaries and more importantly shielding the tail and took Mumbai closer to the 200run mark. At the end of the day, his unbeaten 41 off 48 balls with four fours and one six can really be weighed in gold from Mumbai's point of view. Captain Suryakumar Yadav was the second highest scorer with 40.
Brief Scores: Mumbai 210 in 45.3 overs (S Khan 41 n.o. S Yadav 40, W Jaffer 37; D Hooda 5-55) beat Baroda 197 in 47.1 overs (A Waghmode 69, D Hooda 41; A Herwadkar 3-29, S Thakur 3-39, I Abdulla 2-32.
