Goods worth lakhs destroyed in fire

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has fixed a deadline of three months for the Kharar Municipal Council to look into the issue of shifting the existing cremation ground. The direction by a Division Bench of the HC came on a petition filed in public interest by Kirpal Singh and others

In their petition, the petitioners had told the court that they were residents of Kharar, seeking direction to the official respondents to shift the cremation ground to some other place.

They claimed that the shifting of the cremation ground was essential as the existing ground was situated in residential area. They also told the court that a representation, dated June 18, 2013, was submitted to the Executive Officer, Municipal Council, Kharar, but no action had been taken on their plea to date. The Bench asserted: “After hearing the counsel for the petitioners, without issuing notice of motion as it will unnecessarily delay the matter, we dispose of this petition with a direction to the Executive Officer, MC, to consider and decide the said representation in accordance with law, after providing opportunity of hearing to the petitioners, by passing a speaking order, expeditiously, preferably within a period of three months.”

Facing allegations of forcing a customer to pay service charge and for failing to appear in the forum. The state consumer disputes redressal commission, Chandigarh, has imposed a cost of Rs 3,000 on CCD of Elante Mall.

Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company which runs Café Coffee Day (CCD) at Elante Mall, Chandigarh, had moved the commission challenging the order of consumer disputes redressal forum, Chandigarh, for deciding ex parte against them. As per directions, this amount will be paid to complainant Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Sohana.

Explaining no appearance despite being summoned, the cafe submitted that their representative could not appear as his vehicle broke down.

The commission on September 30, giving an opportunity to the café to be heard, held, “On account of the negligence of CCD, the case is being remanded back for fresh decision after giving them an opportunity to submit its written version. Due to this reason, there is delay in the final disposal of the complaint. Such delay is solely attributable to the café, thus, they are liable to be burdened with costs worth Rs 3,000 to meet the ends of justice.”

The complainant, Lovepreet Singh, filed a complaint stating that he along with his family members went to the Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company, Franchise of Café Coffee Day Café at Elante Mall to have a cup of coffee. The complainant ordered two lounge cappuccinos worth Rs 198. It was stated that when the complainant, after having the said snacks, went to the counter for payment, to his utter surprise, he was asked to pay additional amount of Rs 05.94 towards service charges. It was further stated that the manager failed to disclose, as to who authorized them to charge such service charges, from the customers.

It was further stated that when the complainant refused to accede to the illegal demand of service charges he was insulted in front of his family members. As such, left with no other alternative, the complainant had to pay the said service charges.

The mother and sister of Sandeep, an undertrial who fled from the District Courts complex before being nabbed again, were today booked for misbehaving with police personnel.

When Sandeep was produced in the Court of Judicial Magistrate Shilpi Gupta today and the police sought his five-day custody, his mother, Dolly, and sister, Suneeta, raised a hue and cry.

They argued with the police officials and also intervened in the court proceedings. The two alleged the police would beat up Sandeep and urged the judge not to send him to police custody after the judge awarded the police a day’s custody.

The drama continued outside the court too, after the judge ordered them to move out. Suneeta lay on the ground in front of the police vehicle, urging the police not to take her brother away.

On the complaint of Sub-Inspector Ashok of the crime branch, the police have registered a case against Dolly and Suneeta under Sections 341, 225, 353, 186 and 120-B of the IPC at the Sector 36 police station. They are yet to be arrested.

Suneeta was only yesterday bailed out after being booked for misbehaving with policemen and creating ruckus in a drunkard state on October 12.

Earlier, in the court today, the UT police crime branch sleuths sought Sandeep’s custody on the pretext that his revolver and the car that was forcibly taken away by him were yet to be recovered.

Pleading against the custody, Sandeep showed an injury mark and alleged that the crime branch sleuths had assaulted him.

“I have already been beaten up and if I am remanded in custody again, they will again beat me up. The car has already been recovered by them and they will only beat me,” Sandeep told the court.

In another mysterious theft, that created panic in the city, a family was allegedly drugged by miscreants. Thieves struck at their residence in Sector 15 and decamped with cash and jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh.

The owner, Surinder Kumar had come home with his family after attending cremation of his father-in-law. Surinder, his wife Anita and two daughters Isha and Saloni, had slept when the incident took place. Later after they regained consciousness, they saw the latch of the front room broken and valuables stolen.

“There was distribution of gold ornaments among the family members and Anita was given her share. We have got the medical done of the family. We have got some major clues in the case and it will be solved soon,” said Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Sharma.

“In the morning when I woke up, I was feeling very dizzy. Later, I realized that my family was lying in an unconscious state and I woke them up but they all were feeling very dizzy. We were given sedatives,” said Surinder, who works with the Railways on a senior post.

Not only this, the thieves had a walk in all the rooms as the gold jewellery including 5 earrings, necklaces, and three gold bangles from their daughters’ room were also missing. The robbers also walked into Surinder’s room and stole two mobile phones.

“After my father-in-law was cremated, there was jewellery distribution in the house in Chandigarh and servants were noticing. We have told this to the police,” added Surinder.

“We are checking if there is any CCTV camera installed in the locality,” added another official.

Aditya Vashisht defeated CLTA trainee Krishna Rajput in a one sided match 6-1, 6-0 in the clash for title. Aditya conceded only one game in the first set. Aditya played solid ground strokes and dominated the game. He never allowed Krishna to bounce back.

In the second set Aditya became more aggressive and took full control of the match. Krishna was clueless against him. Aditya managed to clinch title without conceding a game in the second set.

In the girls’ final, Seerat Kaur Pannu from Punjab had an easy win over Jannat Khurana in straight sets.

Seerat took the first set without losing a single game but in the second set Seerat faced some resistance from Jannat Khurana. Seerat won the match 6-0, 6-3.

SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, routed Malwa College, Bondali, 4-0 in the Inter-College Football (Men) A division match, held today at Panjab University grounds today.

DAV College, Hoshiarpur, defeated BAM College, Garshankar, 1-0 score, in another clash between GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, and GGDSD College Chandigarh, the former won by 4-0 score.

In the last match of the day held between the host Panjab University Campus and SGGS College, Chandigarh, the host lost in a closely contested match 5-4.

Meanwhile, in the Inter-College Hockey Women Tournament that was also held at the PU grounds, in the league matches, Government College for Girls, Ludhiana, defeated Dasmesh Girls College, Badal, 2-1.

In the second match, GGS College (W), Chandigarh, and GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, the former won 5-0.

The Chandigarh Table Tennis Club clinched the title of Men’s 27th Chandigarh State Table Tennis Championship and won the S Gurmeet Singh Grewal Memorial Trophy, while in the women’s category the title was bagged by FCI Club. The matches for the tournament were held at the table tennis hall, Sector-23, Chandigarh.

The FCI club team bagged the title by defeating Chandigarh Table Tennis Club (3-1) in the final of women’s category of the S Gurmeet Singh Grewal Memorial Trophy. while in the men’s final Chandigarh Table Tennis Club defeated Winners Club 3-1 and bagged the title trohy.
