BENGALURU: Most of us Indians would have forgotten about the lost heritage in the country. But the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) promptly reminds us of our glorious past. As we welcome the ‘Make in India’ vision laid down by the new government, it is also important to attribute reasonable significance to what was ‘Made in India.’

There are many popular sites in our country which we all know as heritage locations. But not all of them are UNESCO’s World Heritage sites. A place such as forest, lake, monument, island, desert or a city that possesses special cultural or physical significance comes under UNESCO’s World Heritage sites. India is blessed with variety of such sites, because of which it is noted as one of the earliest civilized regions.

It is not necessary to mention specifically about the richness of Indian architecture. Ancient and medieval Indian architectural knowledge is still a myth to modern engineering.

Starting with Agra’s Taj Mahal to Tanjavur’s Brihadeeshwara temple, there are plenty of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Here are some of the most important ones:

# Taj Mahal: India is often identified with Taj as its synonym. A funerary mosque built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan, in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Begum is a symbol of love and is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This 361 years old monument is one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture.
