Vijay was the first choice for Anegan: KV Anand

We hear that Vijay was approached for Anegan first...
After Maattrraan, I was approached by many producers to do a film with Vijay . But I have a habit of not approaching an actor without a clear idea of the story in mind and the script in my hand. I don't believe in narrating one-liners. When I do narrations, I believe in having the complete story ready, or at least, an idea of how it will move forward -that is what gives me the confidence to meet an actor. It took me four months to finish the script, after which I approached Vijay with this film. Unfortunately , he had already signed up for Jilla and Kaththi. So, although he loved the script and really wanted to do it, he didn't have the dates. Plus, if I were to wait for him, it would have taken a yearand-a-half for me to even begin the shoot. Then, we were casually discussing names, when Vijay suggested Dhanush. I was unsure till then about who to cast, but the minute Vijay took Dhanush's name, it all sort of fell into place....
So, no regrets in casting Dhanush?
Absolutely none. He has done full justice to the role and essayed the character to perfection. He is wonderful with romance and has done a great job.
Tell us a bit about Karthik. What role does he play in the film?
Karthik plays a 50-year-old in the film, but is a fun loving guy. The film is set in an IT company and he plays the manager (boss) of a team there. The audience will love his look and his character in the film. It is something he has never done before. He plays an important role in bringing the lead pair together.
What was Karthik like on the sets?
Most artists, once the shot is canned, head back to their vanity vans and spend very little time with the unit. Karthik, however, is different. He comes out after breakfast and stays with the unit the whole time. He has the enthusiasm of a newcomer, even now, after all these years. He gave me the space to discuss and improve his character. Plus, thanks to his experience, he had a lot of inputs to give us. He is such a lovable person and we were all very lucky to have worked with him.
Your films are known for being shot in exotic locations all over the globe. What can we expect in Anegan?
We have shot a few scenes as well as songs in Burma, Cambodia and North America this time.
Finally, can you elaborate on why there is a delay in the release of the film?
Honestly , there are some big films lined up for release. I am lying low and playing the waiting game. Once the biggies announce their dates, then I can plan the release of Anegan. Right now, I am a VIP -`Velai Illa Pattathari' (laughs).
