Get tough cops, inspire fear, punish the guilty
BENGALURU: BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje is in the forefront of the BJP’s protest, demanding security for women. After leading a women’s protest in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Karandlaje told TOI a state-wide agitation was being planned.
What is the state government's role in providing security and building confidence among women?
The state government is responsible for providing security to women under the Constitution.
I’ve tried raising law and order issues pertaining to Karnataka in Parliament and am immediately asked to discuss them with the state government. But it appears the state government has abdicated its responsibilities towards women.
Are women and children safe in Karnataka?
Women are not safe in Karnataka, particularly those living in the Malnad region. Students have to trek long distances through forests to reach schools, and with reports of crime, parents hesitate to send girls to school. It’s difficult to find educational institutions exclusively for girls and women. The government has failed to inspire confidence among people that women are safe. This is a result of arbitrary transfers of police officials based on caste and not rewarding the ones who perform. Under the present government, a
policeman is given responsibility depending on the influence he brings. Take the case of the cop who informed the incident of Congress MLA Vijay Kashappanavar’s brawl in a pub. Instead of appreciating him, he was shunted out.
Why have these crimes increased? Have societal values degenerated?
When a person has fear of the God or law, he doesn’t indulge in such acts. The government should create fear of the law by punishing a couple of perpetrators. When we have persons like primary and secondary education minister Kimmane Ratnakar visiting temples and invoking God to punish those who are tarnishing his image, taking names of BJP leaders and asking the Almighty to punish them by making them lose their deposits in the next elections, it is blackmail tactics. I call this attention diversion. Exposure to films and TV programmes also contributes in such cases.
CM Siddaramaiah has accused BJP of politicizing the Thirthahalli girl’s abduction and death…
Is there any election coming up for the BJP to politicize the issue? The police department is trying to suppress the issue by planting false evidence like the suicide note, supposedly written by the girl.
Can the state government be blamed if educational institutions fail to implement safety measures stipulated by it?
Why are some educational institutions violating safety measures? It’s because education department officers are hand-in-glove with them in overlooking violations of English medium schools run on Kannada medium permits. If the government acts tough, all schools will fall in line.
What does the BJP want from the government?
Give people the feeling that the government is there and with you. We shouldn’t be uttering what we say to a helpless person -- only God can help you. Don’t put the wrong person in the right job.
