TDP set to get Cabinet berth as Naidu drops hint
NEW DELHI/ HYDERABAD: A five-minute conversation that Andhra Pradesh chief minister and TeluguDesam Party president ChandrababuNaidu had with Prime Minister NarendraModi in the midst of the India Economic Summit here on Thursday had hopefuls in the regional party conclude that the TDP was being offered a berth in the Union cabinet expansion that is likely to happen on Sunday.

While being interviewed by a moderator at the summit, Naidu was informed of an important phone call for him. Excusing himself, he left the dais for about five minutes. It turned out the phone call was from Modi.
The suspense was heightened when, on being asked by the moderator if the telephone call had to do with the cabinet expansion, Naidu said the PM would shortly expand his team. “You’ll know the details in a day or two,” he said.
The CM’s statement sent TDP circles into a tizzy, with many aspirants concluding the message from Modi was there would be one berth for the party. “At present, we’ve only one representation in the form of Union civil aviation minister AshokGajapathiRaju,” said a hopeful. “We’re expecting another ministerial post, either of minister of state with independent charge or under a cabinet minister.”
Among those in the race for a TDP berth in the cabinet is RajyaSabha MP SujanaChowdhary. The industrialist-turned-politician has increasingly hogged centrestage in party affairs since Naidu took over as AP CM in June. Others in contention include fellow RS MP C M Ramesh and LokSabha MP ThotaNarashimham from Kakinada.
There is even talk that Naidu could recommend Telangana MP ChMalla Reddy (Malkajgiri) for the cabinet berth. A Telangana representation in the Modi cabinet would help the TDP arrest its erosion in the new state. “If it’s true there’s an invitation for a TDP berth in the cabinet expansion, then Naidu will take a call by tomorrow,” said a party source.
