Armenia President plays first move in Aronian-Liren match (PHOTOS)

MOSCOW. – President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, who is also President of the Armenian Chess Federation, visited the competition venue on the third day of competitions at the International TASHIR chess tournament in memory of Tigran Petrosian, and devoted to the 85th birth anniversary of the 9th World Chess Champion, which is held in Moscow. Sargsyan, who is also chairman of the organization committee of the Tigran Petrosian memorial tournament, played the first move in the third-round match between Grandmasters (GMs) Levon Aronian (Armenia) and Ding Liren (China).  

Earlier, the Armenian President toured the competition venue together with President Andrey Filatov of the Russian Chess Federation.  While the GMs were continuing their chess matches, the chess federations of the two countries signed the White Rook agreement, which aims to develop children’s and youth chess in Russia.    

The Tashir Group and the Russian Chess Federation are the organizers of this event, in which the world’s top eight chess GMs are competing.   The tournament kicked off on Monday, and it will run until November 11.
