SURAT: A mob of around 500 people gheraoed the Limbayat police station on Wednesday, demanding stringent action against five persons arrested for allegedly driving a woman to suicide.
Jyoti Chelmalla had hanged to death at her house on Tuesday. She was taken to the New Civil Hospital where her husband Kiran reportedly told the medical officer that she had died of electrocution.
However, on noticing a mark on her neck, the doctor sent the body for postmortem which revealed that she died of hanging.
A mob had also gathered outside the postmortem room on Tuesday, demanding the report. They even got into heated arguments with the doctors.
On Wednesday, police arrested Kiran, his father Somaiya, mother Padma and brothers Navin and Vijay. The deceased woman's uncle Vijay Padamshali had lodged a complaint against them. Padamshali alleged in his complaint that Jyoti was being mentally and physically tortured for dowry. She could not take the harassment any more and ended her life, he told police
Cops resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd and police force from other police station was rushed to Limbayat to control the situation. The mob was demanding that the accused be handed over to them. Locals again clashed with police in the evening near the residence of the deceased in Marutinagar before her body was taken for cremation.
So far, police investigation revealed that Jyoti got married to Kiran, a garment shop owner, around one-and-a-half year ago. Her relatives alleged that at the time of marriage Rs 3 lakh dowry was given to the accused family but they continued demanding more. Since last few months, the accused were demanding money from Jyoti to buy a bike for Kiran.
