He is a doctor but he preferred to steal cables of BSES to offset his financial loses. Meet 24-year-old Murshid Alam Rahi, who along with his associates had been stealing drums of cables from South Delhi in early morning hours by posing as power company employee.

Rahi had been running his private clinic in East Delhi's New Usmanpur for the last one year. But behind that garb of a medico, he was actually a thief who would identify the localities from where the cables could be stolen. He and his associates would then hire a tempo and even get a crane to take away the drums of BSES cables right under the noses of unsuspecting police personnel and local residents.

"After facing huge losses, he decided to commit theft and discussed his plan with his two associates, Shahnawaz (23) and Mohd Riyazudeen (25). They later decided to steal drums of cables from South Delhi every fortnight," a senior police officer of South district told Mail Today.

"After identifying the spot, they hired one tempo and even got a crane to pull out the cables. They dressed as power company employees to con the security and police personnel doing rounds in the area." The accused used to change the shape of the cables and then sell it in local market.

The accused persons were arrested after deputy general manager of Nizamuddin subdivision, M.P. Singh, lodged a complaint of theft of two drums of cable wires worth around `8 lakh with the Lodhi Colony police station.

"Two drums of power cables were lying outside the Centenary Methodist Church in Lodhi Colony area as existing power cables from Nizamuddin to Cabinet Secretariat in CGO Complex was getting replaced," the police officer said, adding that in the early hours on 31 October, the accused went there with a crane and stole the drums of wire from the spot.

After the case of theft was registered, the police launched an investigation headed by inspector Ajay Negi. The locals described to the police how the 'power company employees' looked like. "During the investigation, the police found some CCTV footages with visuals of the accused and from that they prepared their sketches. The police began door-todoor verification and showed sketches to all the local transporters," the police officer said, adding that one transporter identified the accused. The transporter also revealed that the accused had hired his tempo on October 31 after claiming they were working for the power company.

"The police personnel were later taken to the hideouts of the accused. A trap was laid and the police arrested all the accused persons from their residences. The police have recovered eight per cent of stolen cables from their possession and is now trying to establish their earlier involvement in similar theft cases," the officer added.
