SURREY – An Indo-Canadian man has been arrested and charged in relation to a killing of another young Indo-Canadian in Surrey earlier this year.

Early on June 19, Mounties and paramedics were called to the 13100-block of 65B Avenue on a report of a man being stabbed. The police officers had been responding to complaints about a brawl, at about 2 a.m.

Police found Mandepaak “Deepak” Chahal, 22 of Surrey, lying on the road at 65B Avenue and 131st Street, a short stroll from St. Bernadette elementary school in Newton. Chahal was taken to hospital where he died.

Surrey’s Sukhpreet “Jesse” Shergill, 20, was arrested and charged Wednesday with manslaughter with Chahal’s murder.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) had taken over  the investigation and announced the charges this week.

Sgt. Adam MacIntosh, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, thanked the Surrey RCMP and “community of Newton” for helping investigators.

“We would like to extent our condolences once again to Deepak’s family and thank both the Surrey RCMP and the community of Newton for assisting us in this investigation.” said Sgt. Adam MacIntosh of IHIT.

Shergill appeared in Surrey provincial court on Thursday afternoon.
