NHAI to demolish drainage on Hamirpur road
Kanpur: National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to demolish two feet high drainage constructed on the bank of Kanpur–Sagar via Hamirpur road between Naubasta to Ghalla Mandi.
According to an NHAI official, demolition work would take place as soon as widening of road was finished. NHAI is at present widening the road between Kanpur to Kabrai via Hamirpur, a 123 km stretch since the last two years.
The official informed that road between Kabari and Ramaipur had been widened and now road construction, culvert and over-bridge construction work was going on. The work of widening of highway is going on for the last couple of years.
Naveen Mishra, project director of NHAI informed that two feet high drainage in villages and towns had been constructed with an aim to drain out the village water. Now the height of the drain was responsible for frequent accidents and regular road jam at some places. At Bidhanoo, the wide road shrunk to a narrow lane inside the town area due to two feet high
drain, and the situation was almost similar at Ramaipur area.
NHAI engineers informed that pressure of trucks in Kanpur Hamirpur route was too much. Scores of overloded trucks laden with gravel and grit often crush several passersby to death.
Though the covered drain was constructed to drain out water of the village but it has been encroached by the shop keepers. Several petty shopkeepers have made their temporary shops over the drain while permanent shop keepers were using it as their goods display area. Due to these encroachment walkers have to move on road.
Project director stated that frequent accidents due to drainage had attracted their attention, and they decided to demolish the drainage and construct a 5-feet wide inter-locking footpath in its place. Directions have been issued to construct the drainage after leaving more space for road. Widening of road is almost complete except a section of 13 km. As soon as widening work is finished, demolition of high drainage would take place, he added.
