One of the leading football clubs in the Chinese Super League have appointed a former Italian superstar as their new head coach.

Guangzhou Evergrande, who were crowned champions in four seasons of the league, appointed former Italian center back Fabio Cannavaro as their new head coach Wednesday.

According to the statement issued by the club, 41-year-old Cannavaro will replace another Italian football Marcelo Lippi.

Lippi reportedly will still be associated with the club as a coach, however, he will not manage the day-to-day affairs of the team like he did in the past and will now instead undertake executive tasks of the club.

During his football career, the Italian centre-back played for many Italian clubs, including Inter, Juventus, Parma, Napoli and Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Cannavaro was the captain of the Italian national football team that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup, a tournament in which he was also named the FIFA World Player of the Year.
