After establishing Satellite Data Analysis and Application Centre in association with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) is now working on setting up of a National Research Centre for Big Data Analytics at Engineering College on the university premises.
The centre, which is being established at a cost of Rs.15 lakh, is likely to be inaugurated by Guntur MP Galla Jayadev on November 18. The multidisciplinary analytics centre covers data research and analysis in mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering and pharmacy fields.
It would serve as a platform to operate with large amounts of data. Big data is going to play a major role in future in information technology and promises a lot of opportunities for students and even research scholars. The idea was to enhance the employability skills of students in different areas, said ANU Vice-Chancellor K. Viyyanna Rao.
The university is planning to seek financial assistance from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) for the centre. Following the DST call for Big Data initiatives, the university authorities are preparing projects in different fields like big data infrastructure, big data search mining and management, security and privacy, applications etc.
Heads of Departments and senior faculty members are working on different projects like visual patterns, river grids optimisation, cancer gene analysis, bank risk analysis on credit system, traffic analysis with focus on drivers’ behaviour on highways, said E. Sreenivasa Reddy, Director, Training and Placement Cell.
There are plans to enter into an agreement with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Bengaluru, for technical assistance, training and software provision for taking up different big data projects, he informed.
In addition, the university is planning to launch M.Tech. programme in Big Data Analytics as an evening course for this academic year. The proposal would be discussed at the Executive Council meeting to be held shortly.
