Restaurant Review: Le Berian makes you feel at home with biryani & meaty quest

    Synopsis

The well-cooked meat from the leg of lamb comes off easily. The lamb isn't overwhelmingly smothered by masala gravy and is utterly delicious.

There is a tribe of believers in biryani, seduced by the careful layers of meat and onion masala between basmati, the fragrance of rosewater, saffron and ghee, the garnish of birista and dry fruits.
This tribe will want to discover Le Berian, that delivers biryani by the kilo (serves 8-10), packed in neat rectangular microwavable boxes, or in the regular full/ half quantities you get in a restaurant. We opt for home delivery, so boxes come in, paired with staid raita.

The Chicken Tikka Biryani (Rs 190), Paneer Makhani Biryani ( Rs 180) and Butter Chicken Biryani (Rs 220) are wholly satisfying. The Chicken Afghani Tikka Biryani (Rs 200) is the star — the basmati, white gravied chicken, coriander and onions combination so flavorsome, you'll want seconds.

Next in line is the Bohri Style Lamb (Rs 240), Le Berian's signature gosht that delivers on the promise of a good old mutton biryani. The eureka moment happens over the 1.5-kg Raan (Rs 1,400).

The well-cooked meat from the leg of lamb comes off easily. The lamb isn't overwhelmingly smothered by masala gravy and is utterly delicious. But it would have gone best with naan (roomali roti or reshmi paratha are on the menu), Arabic bread or just mopped up by soft pav instead of the biryani rice we had.

Dessert is spare at Le Berian, either Vegan Chocolate Mousse (Rs 60) or Saffron Phirni (Rs 70), served in typical chai glasses. The mousse is recommended to us and it's a creamy, chocolately concoction that more than passes muster.

There are rolls of Reshmi Paratha stuffed with paneer or chicken (Rs 110/140 approx) to be had, curries like Chicken Lasooni Palak or Bhuna Ghost (Rs 180/200), Fish Tikka or Prawns Masala Biryani and even a tempting Peshwari Dal Bukhara (Rs 170). Perhaps next time… that's if we can tear ourselves away from the Raan.
