At a time when the Government schools are accused of having inadequate infrastructure, a huge 1953-built hostel-turned-academic block in Nanjappa Corporation Boys Higher Secondary School in the city has been remaining unutilised for years.
Likewise, a 1957-constructed textile technology hall situated adjacent to the said block, which was once used for vocational training of students, is also remaining underutilised.
Pathetic lookWithout being used for a long time, the more than 10 rooms in the hostel-turned-academic block now wear a pathetic look with broken windows and various materials lying scattered in the floors.
The building is said to be used occasionally by certain Corporation officials to dump materials and also to store freebies to be distributed under various welfare schemes.
School headmistress R. Saraswathi did not know the exact reasons for the dilapidated condition of the block as she got posted to the school only a year ago.
“During 1984-91 when I was studying in the school, the block was full of activity. I still vividly remember attending Standard VI there,” said S. Dhananjayan, a chartered accountant.
ProposalAam Aadmi Party convener S. Sundarapandian said that the party had given a proposal to the Corporation administration to relocate some of the classes from the nearby Jaiva Bhai Corporation girls school, which was already overcrowded with more than 6,000 students, to this building.
When contacted, Corporation Commissioner M. Ashokan said that the opinion of the engineering department would be obtained before acting on the issue of reviving activities in the block.
