ITI Calls on Congress to Make MLAT Budget Funding a Priority

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 -- The Information Technology Industry Council issued the following news release: Today, in a joint multi-association letter to Congressional leadership, ITI urged lawmakers to act quickly to increasing funding of the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) process. In conjunction with the letter, Yael Weinman, ITI's vice president for global privacy policy, issued the following statement: "MLATs are critical tools for international cooperation on criminal investigations, but even as requests by foreign governments are increasing, reduced Justice Department resources are straining its ability to respond, creating a significant backlog. Disturbingly, a number of foreign governments are bypassing the MLAT process and submitting requests directly to U.S. companies, creating challenging legal conflicts. The administration has committed to speed up MLAT processing and to make the process more efficient. Congress is in a position now to do its part and improve the financial resources dedicated to MLAT."
